Harrogate Bingo Hall May Close Down
Monday, May 5th, 2008The Lucky Numbers bingo hall in Harrogate, may soon be in jeopardy of closing down. It has been revealed that the owner of the club, Stephen Bartle maintains that the bingo club is no longer a viable enterprise and he has put forward a planning application. Can you believe? He wants to have the land approved to erect a block of flats! Why is this always the case?
This bingo hall has been popular for more than forty-five years, after it was converted from the Palace Theatre which was opened in 1914, to a cinema after World War II. Developers have informed the Harrogate Council that the present building is not able to be converted into the eight one bedroom flats that the owner wishes, and that no bingo operator has been found in their eleven month search for one. They also said that the building was of no historic or aesthetic value?
Should the bingo club close down, it will be the last one in Harrogate to do so and 13 full-time, plus nine part-time jobs will be lost, besides the fact that the community will feel the loss very deeply, most of the club members a pensioners and live locally.
