Government Refuses to Recognize the Root of Bingo Industry Problems
Wednesday, May 7th, 2008The Government have taken a firm stand and according to the Times “called House on the bingo industry”. They are refusing to recognize that VAT is an issues for industry profits and have categorically stated that they will not be lifting it, citing that “tax was not at the root of the bingo industry’s problems”.
This came in a response to the “save our bingo” petition presented to Downing Street, and it also cam just two days after minister at the Culture Department, Gerry Sutcliffe hinted that there would be aid available for the UK Bingo industry.
Just last week Mr. Sutcliffe addressed the Bingo Association and added that he though it was fair to assume that the Prime Minister, Mr. Brown, was sympathetic to the industry and the fact that bingo plays an important role in supporting local communities.
This decision to not to remove VAT from bingo games comes as a blow to the industry and effectively removes the trump card of both Mecca and Gala Bingo who were counting on the lifting of VAT to aid their beleaguered land based bingo operations. They have continuously warned the Government that without the removal of VAT, they will not be able to prevent the closures of more bingo clubs in the UK.
