Gala Bingo and Stores Evacuated After Bomb Threat

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Bingo players at the Gala Bingo Club in Liversage Street and shoppers in Derby’s Westfield Centre were evacuated after the centre received a bomb threat. This was just yesterday at 2pm. Staff members at the Next store were called three times in a row, one after the other, by a man who had claimed that he placed a bomb in the shop.

Next was evacuated as with the rest of the shopping centre and fifty staff members as well as players from the bingo club went with them. The store was searched but no devices were found. A spokesman from the Derbyshire police department said that this appears to be a hoax and they were busy with a process of conducting and investigation. There was no comment from the spokesperson at the Westfield centre and no one at Gala Bingo was available for comment.

It is completely beyond me why anyone would want to make hoax bomb threats, it completely disrupts businesses and actually makes people fearful for their lives. It is certainly not funny and anyone making a bomb threat can actually get into serious trouble with the law. A lot of elderly people play bingo and it would certainly be a horrific thing is someone make a bomb threat and panicked someone so badly that they became ill.
